On March 12, 2025, Dr. Daniel Vigo, B.C.’s chief scientific adviser for psychiatry, toxic drugs, and concurrent disorders, released new guidance to doctors and psychiatrists across the province. The guidance explains how the Mental Health Act can be used to provide involuntary care for adults who are too unwell to seek help themselves. It aims to clear up confusion about the Act and help health-care providers know when involuntary treatment may be appropriate.
