On September 15, 2024, Premier David Eby announced that BC is opening secure facilities for people with long-term mental-health and addiction challenges under the Mental Health Act. New treatment sites will include secure housing at Surrey Pretrial Services Centre and Alouette Correctional Centre. Additionally, over 400 new mental-health beds will be built.
Dr. Daniel Vigo, appointed as B.C.’s chief scientific adviser, is working to improve care for individuals with complex mental-health issues. The Province is also addressing the toxic-drug crisis and organized crime at ports to curb illegal drug imports, calling for federal action on bail reform and port security. These initiatives are part of B.C.’s Safer Communities Action Plan.
