You Are Not Alone: The NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health
by MD Ken Duckworth

As the book states in its motto, You Are Not Alone is the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) navigation guide to mental health. It is written by experts in the psychiatric field and contains lots of examples and advice from people with mental problems and families with a loved one living with mental illness.

As my loved one, an adult in their early 40s, recently experienced an episode catalogued as “manic” without us parents having the slightest idea of what this is or being prepared to deal with it, the book helped me understand how to behave and the most importantly that there is hope.

The book presents numerous patients who learned how to cope with their condition and have an accomplished life. Personally, this is the aspect I appreciated the most.

I recommend this book to my loved one who has started reading books written by specialists, as opposed to just reading the Internet. This triggered acknowledgment of the new condition and how will deal with it, which is a huge step forward because as I learned and experienced, the acceptance of the illness is one of the most difficult steps.

Myself, I learned through the examples presented how wide the range of mental illness diagnoses is, that they can evolve into different ones, and that multiple conditions can coexist. Diagnosis and establishing the best treatment is a long process, and the patient coping with their condition and collaborating with their doctors is essential.

You Are Not Alone helped me learn how to cope with the condition of my loved one, how to listen, show empathy and understand. It removed most of the panic and pain I was experiencing, not knowing how to help and behave around my loved one.

At last, NAMI and the examples are American, the resources and aid presented are available in the U.S., but this was of no concern to me. It is quite easy to translate them into the Canadian equivalent resources.
