Welcome to the New Year! We hope you had a good start so far. Here are a few key points to consider to feel more prepared and at ease:

1. Setting Intentions for the New Year: Self-care Goals

Examples:

  • Attend a support group at least once a month and/or set aside 15 minutes daily for self-care.
  • Simple self-care practices that can be easily incorporated into a busy day – mindfulness, short walks, hobbies, deep breathing, relaxation exercises, meditation apps, or journaling.
  • Try the Balance app and/or How we feel app.
  • Forgiving oneself is very important. You are doing your best at all given times. Use the Hawaiian Ho’oponopono prayer.  Here’s a video to follow along:

“I’m sorry”, “Please forgive me”, “Thank you”, “I love you”

2. Building Your Support Network: No Caregiver is an Island

Examples:

  • Attend Pathways’ Coffee Talk to meet others regularly.
  • Consider scheduling regular check-ins with a trusted friend or therapist for emotional support.

3. Setting Healthy Boundaries: How to Care Without Losing Yourself

Examples of healthy boundaries:

  • Taking breaks, saying no when necessary, creating time for personal activities, expressing needs, not allowing abuse.
  • Communicate boundaries with compassion and firmness.
  • Use I-statements, check out NVC for a way to communicate that does not cause harm.

4. Celebrating Small Wins: Finding Joy in the Journey

Examples:

  • Reflect on the moments of success throughout the year—whether it’s progress in your loved one’s treatment, maintaining a self-care routine, or simply getting through a difficult day.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate small victories by journaling, sharing wins with others, or giving yourself positive affirmations that you got this.

5. Looking Ahead: Staying Hopeful for the Year to Come

Remember the importance of staying hopeful and patient in the caregiving process.  There is always hope, hang in there.  You are not alone on this journey. We are here for you. You may want to take some time and reflect on the past year and evaluate what you wished you did differently and incorporate that into the new year. Remember to schedule self-care time or it’s easily forgotten to do. Please be compassionate with yourself and accept that you are doing the best you can.
